I’ve been down this road before with this blend, and wanted to have a revisit. What we have here is the Ventisquero Grey [Glacier] Single Block 2018. This is from the D.O. Valle de Colchagua specifically the Apalta Vineyard. It is a Mediterranean styled blend of garnacha (62%), cariñena (19%) and mataro (19%). The Apalta Vineyard is located not far from the Tinguiririca River. The soils consist of stone and sand, with red clay making it ideal for these particular varieties. It spent six months in French oak.
Leer en Español With a 62% presence in garnacha, it is heavily influenced by aromas of ripe strawberries, some cooked plum and herbs. It gives it a base of a lighter color. For those who are not familiar with garnacha, it is also known as grenache and cannonau. It also contains 19% of cariñena, also known as mazuelo, but as we call it here in Chile, carignan. This gives this wine some spice and almost meaty complexity. By also having 19% mataro, also know by more popular names as monastrell or mourvèdre, gives this wine a tint of purple. A perfect blending grape giving this wine structure, with nice tannins given in the proper proportions.
Tasting Notes:
I poured this wine into a decanter for around 45 minutes to let it open up. It had a medium garnet-purple color, surprising transparency and medium viscosity. Immediate aromas included strawberry and licorice. Other notes consisted of ripe raspberry, dark cherry and a whiff of elder flower. There were some notes of oak, but very faint ones. Had a slight earthy characteristic to it reminding me of leaves right before they fall off the tree. On the palate was a wine with medium body, medium alcohol, medium acid and finish. A lot of medium going on here, which makes it nicely balanced and a very easy drinker. More fruity than earthy, and sufficiently structured to keep one coming back for more.

He tenido previas experiencias con esta mezcla y quería revisarla de nuevo. Lo que tenemos aquí es Ventisquero Grey [Glacier] Single Block 2018. Es de la D.O. Valle de Colchagua, específicamente la Viña Apalta. Es una mezcla Mediterránea de garnacha (62%), cariñena (19%) y mataro (19%). La Viña Apalta está ubicada cerca del Río Tinguiririca. La tierra está hecha de rocas y arena, con arcilla roja lo que la hace ideal para estos tipos de cepas. Fue envejecido en roble francés por seis meses.
Con 62% de garnacha, está muy influenciado con aromas de fresas maduras, ciruela cocida y hierbas. Le da una base de un color ligero. Para aquellas personas que no están familiarizadas con la garnacha, también se le conoce como grenache y cannonau. El vino también contiene 19% de cariñena, también conocido como mazuelo, o acá en Chile, carignan. Esta cepa le da un toque de especies y una complejidad de carne. Además, contiene un 19% de mataro, también conocido popularmente como monastrell o mourvèdre, el cual le da una tonalidad púrpura. Una mezcla perfecta de cepas que le otorgan a este vino estructura con buenos taninos en las proporciones correctas.
Notas de Degustación:
Vertí este vino dentro un decantador durante 45 minutos. Tenía un color granate-púrpura, sorprendentemente transparente y una viscosidad media. Inmediatamente puedes notar aromas de fresa (frutilla) y regaliz. Otros aromas detectados corresponden a frambuesa madura, cerezas (guindas) y un olorcillo a flor de saúco. Tenía ligeras notas de roble y un olor a tierra característico que me recordaba las hojas en un árbol antes de que caigan en el otoño. En el paladar es un vino con un cuerpo-medio, alcohol medio, acidez media y final medio. Si bien son muchos “medios”, es precisamente lo que lo hace estar en equilibrio y fácil de beber. Más frutal que terroso, y suficientemente estructurado para continuar bebiendo.
