Small independent producer worth trying.
2013 Trabun Syrah Requinoa Cachapoal
Trabun is a small production independent winery with only 5,756 bottles of this Syrah made. It’s a member of MOVI, Chile’s Independent Winemaker Movement Association. Trabun means “Meeting Point” in Mapudungun, because when winemaker Sergio Avendaño, who is also a musician, converted part of his family orchard in Requinoa into a vineyard, he felt he was combining his passions of wine and music. Avendaño says making wine and music are similar because they both require experimenting, growth, and artistry. Also, people have different tastes in both and both require your senses.
Tasting Notes
Complete Rhone-like nose of medium intensity: dried herbs, chocolate, meaty notes and ripe dark fruit. The palate is super smooth. Tannins must have softened with 7 years of age. Ripe blueberry, some licorice and vanilla. No excess heat or oak. It’s aged in used French oak barrels. 14% alcohol. It could use a little more acidity and verve, but otherwise it’s a smooth aged Syrah with slightly modern features on the palate but more French/Rhone-like nose, which is typical for Chilean wines in general — Chilean wines often feel more Old World on the nose and more New World on the palate. This wine is at a great stage now with its lovely texture and nuances, but perhaps it’s beginning to lose a bit of its shine, so drink now. 91 pts AC.

Trabun es una bodega independiente de pequeña producción con solo 5.756 botellas de este Syrah elaboradas. Es miembro de MOVI, el Movimiento de Viñateros Independientes de Chile. Trabun significa “Punto de Encuentro” en mapudungun, porque cuando el enólogo Sergio Avendaño, quien también es músico, convirtió parte de su huerto familiar en Requínoa en un viñedo, sintió que combinaba sus pasiones por el vino y la música. Avendaño dice que hacer vino y música son similares porque ambos requieren experimentación, crecimiento y arte. Además, las personas tienen gustos diferentes en ambos y ambos requieren tus sentidos.
Notas de Cata
Nariz de intensidad media. Es completa y similar a la del Ródano: hierbas secas, chocolate, notas de tocino y fruta negra madura. En boca es super suave después de 7 años de edad. Arándano maduro, algo de regaliz y vainilla. Sin exceso de calor ni roble. Se cría en barricas usadas de roble francés. 14% de alcohol. Falta un poco de acidez y brío, pero por lo demás es un Syrah añejado suave con características ligeramente modernas en el paladar pero con una nariz más francesa / parecida al Ródano, que es típico de los vinos chilenos en general; los vinos chilenos a menudo se sienten más del Viejo Mundo en nariz y más Nuevo Mundo en boca. Este vino está en su apogeo de evolución ahora con su hermosa textura y matices, pero tal vez esté comenzando a perder un poco de su brillo, así que bébalo ahora. 91 puntos AC.
