Wine Review: Valentine’s Day Wine

As Valentine’s Day approaches, many of you will be having romantic meals with your significant others. What could be more symbolic of a wine choice with that meal than sharing your Corazon (heart) with them?

Corazon is the new premium wine project of boutique winemaker Marcela Chandia, who founded Chile diVino in 2014. You may already know her other two wines: La Confundida (100% Carmenere) and El Consentido (100% Cabernet Sauvignon). Corazon, however, is a blend of 42% Carmenere, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Petit Verdot and aged 14 months in new French oak. All of them are sourced from Almahue, Cachapoal. About 157 cases were made of Corazon. 

Chandia says Corazon is for wine lovers. So whether you have a special someone to share it with on the 14th or you just want to express your love for wine, you can give Corazon a try to see if it will steal your heart. 

Tasting Notes

2018 Corazón (Chile diVino) Almahue Cachapoal

The nose is dominated by vanilla oak and ripe red fruit, but some herbal and spice notes also appear in the background. The palate is a little warm and features cherry/raspberry fruit with good acidity, some camphor, tobacco and medium-soft tannins. I would prefer a little less new oak, but it’s not overwhelming and others may prefer it and give it a couple more points. It could also use some aging or a longer decant since it’s less than 3 years old. There’s a lot of power on the palate which could use some softening up. 

Overall, it’s not a shy wine, and for Valentine’s Day you don’t want something that is cool, light, coy and subtle. Instead, this is warm, heady, intoxicating and generous with good acidity to keep it decidedly red fruited in style–perfect for Valentine’s Day.  91+ AC.

I originally got it at Les Dix Vins, who has carried all her wines in the past. It was around 22,000 CLP ($30).  I don’t think she exports at the moment, but you can look here to see where else in Chile carries her wines.

Corazón es el nuevo proyecto de vinos de autor premium de la enóloga Marcela Chandia, quien fundó Chile diVino en 2014. Corazon, sin embargo, es una mezcla de 42% Carmenere, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon y 29% Petit Verdot y tiene una crianza de 14 meses en roble francés nuevo. Todos ellos provienen de Almahue, Cachapoal. 157 cajas fue elaboradas de Corazón. 

Chandia dice que Corazón es para los amantes del vino. Entonces, ya sea que tengas a alguien especial con quien compartirlo el día 14 o simplemente quieras expresar tu amor por el vino, puedes probar Corazón para ver si te robará el corazón. 

Notas de Cata

2018 Corazón (Chile diVino) Almahue Cachapoal

En nariz predomina el roble vainilla y la fruta roja madura, pero también aparecen algunas notas herbáceas y especiadas de fondo. En boca es un poco cálido y presenta fruta de cereza / frambuesa con buena acidez, algo de alcanfor, tabaco y taninos medio-suaves. Preferiría un poco menos roble nuevo, pero no abruma y otros pueden preferirlo y darle más puntos También podría necesitar un poco de envejecimiento o una decantación más prolongada, ya que tiene menos de 3 años. Hay mucho poder en el paladar que podría ablandarse un poco. 

En general, no es un vino tímido, y para el Día de San Valentín no querrás algo ligero, tímido y sutil. En cambio, es cálido, embriagador, y generoso con buena acidez para mantenerlo decididamente con sabor de fruto rojo, perfecto para el Día de San Valentín.  91+ AC.
