Wine Review: Unconventional Winery’s Unique Two Variety Vines

Can one vine grow two varieties? At Bodegas Re in Chile, they do. Bodegas Re

Bodegas Re is a relatively new family winery located in the middle of the Casablanca Valley, but it was founded by one of the sons of the 9 generation Morande wine family. It’s a winery known for its experimenting in winemaking and atypical blends. For example, they produce a Syrah-Pinot Noir, a Cabernet Sauvignon-Carignan blend, co-fermented Chardonnay-Pinot Noir as both a red and white wine, and a Moscatel-Pinot Noir white.

Fraternal Twin Vines

One wine that I’ve passed by at the wine shop but never really investigated is their Doble cuvee.  I had just assumed it was one of their typical blends, in this case co-fermented Carignan-Grenache. However, it’s more complex than that. First of all, it’s from 65+ year old Pais roots. That’s not too uncommon in Chile. Many producers graft other varieties onto old Pais vines. What makes this unique, is they’ve grafted two varieties onto one vine. One branch is grafted with Grenache facing the Andes mountains to the East and the other branch grafted with Carignan towards the west to the Pacific. It’s two distinct varieties from one vine that’s grown, harvested and vinified as one vine into one wine–it’s like fraternal twin vines.

Tasting Notes

2022 Bodegas Re Doble Maule

50% Carignan and 50% Grenache but both grafted on and grown off the same 65+ year old Pais vine and then harvested and fermented together in large concrete amphoras. Then it spent 12+ months in French oak foudres. On the nose it’s more about the sweet spices of French oak mixed with some bright dark and red fruits. On the palate, it’s a little simpler but intense with tart red fruit, a touch of Mediterranean herbs, a medium-body and good overall balance if you like the acidity of Carignan or Italian Sangiovese. For others, it’d be more of a food wine given the tartness. It’s more Carignan to me than Grenache. 92
